Job Description:

This position the FPGA engineer will be a member of a cross functional team with hands on responsibility for all phases of the embedded firmware development process from requirements definition through integration and testing of completed product. Responsibilities will include system/requirement analysis, architecture definition, high-level design, detailed design, implementation, testing/verification, and documentation for FPGAs in radio or other communications products. Requires the application of the principles and techniques of engineering and mathematical analysis.

  • Responsible for research, design, and development of FPGA programmable logic systems, in conjunction with hardware and embedded software product development.

  • Analyze requirements to determine feasibility of design within schedule and cost constraints.

  • Consult with electrical engineers and other engineering staff to evaluate interfaces between hardware, programmable logic, software/firmware, and operational performance requirements of the overall system.

  • Perform VHDL/Verilog/System Verilog coding, timing analysis, constraint generation, test bench generation, and simulation.

  • Perform FPGA/software/hardware component integration.

  • Develop and conduct FPGA system testing procedures, programming, and documentation.

  • Provide technical support to internal and external customers.

  • Conduct/participate in design reviews.

  • Identify, track, and repair defects.


  • BS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience developing and verifying FPGA-based engineering solutions.

  • Proficient in VHDL/Verilog design

  • Solid understanding of basic digital logic design concepts (understanding how VHDL code translates into logic primitives within an FPGA); detailed understanding of the architectural elements within a Xilinx/Altera FPGA

  • Solid understanding of static timing analysis and the process by which timing closure is achieved in a design

  • Must have a thorough understanding of the Xilinx and/or Altera tool suites used to generate FPGA designs

  • Experience using HDL Simulators, Configuration Management tools, and scripting languages (Python, Perl)

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and debug FPGA firmware and related hardware and software issues.

  • Experience with high speed memory interfaces (DDRx) and high speed protocols (PCI Express, SDIO, Ethernet)

  • Highly motivated, self-starter, who works well in team environments.

  • Capable and willing to lead small technical teams

  • Solid technical writing and communications skills.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • MSEE

  • MATLAB, C, C++ programming experience

  • Security
