Throughthe operational review of buildings a number of business improvementinitiatives have been identified. Onesuch initiative is the introduction of discipline teams to support growthwithin a scalable structure and provide effective line management. The introduction of discipline teams isdesigned to replicate middle management responsibilities across a number ofteams, and facilitate the delegation of line management responsibilities with atarget ratio of 1:6. The role of PrincipalEngineer is born out of this initiative, and provides a management steppingstone for technical leaders of the future.

Function and Scope

The Senior Electrical Engineerwill play a role in providing design leadership and discipline integration ofprojects delivered by the built Environment business. Using technicalexperience and excellent people skills, the Senior Engineer will manageprojects and guide / mentor less experienced engineers to produce designs andassociated deliverables for projects. The role will provide a client facing leadfor projects and ensure that Jacobs maintains the highest technical standards,levels of service and quality.

Main Responsibilities

As amember of the regional multi-disciplinary design team, a Senior Engineerplays a crucial role in the delivery of technical solutions, acting in supportof the Team Principal, balancing commercial, technical and mentoringresponsibilities. A Senior Engineerwill be responsible for:

  • The delivery of technical outputs of projects and the seamless sharing of information with other discipline teams;

  • Ensuring technical quality through implementation of best practice and continuous improvement processes;

  • Representing Jacobs in liaising with clients, architects and other design team members;

  • Develop and maintaining excellent client relationships through successful project execution;

  • Develop talent bycoaching and mentoring less experienced staff and supporting their technicalcareer development aspirations;

  • Management of project resources and reporting to the Team Principal;

  • Management of engineers within the team with a range of skills and experience;

  • Assisting in the preparation of technical and commercial bid proposals.

Communications and WorkingRelationships

The Senior Engineer will cooperate and work closely with other members of themulti-disciplinary team, members of regional teams across the UK and within theEuropean Technical Network.

The role will principally entail:

  • Will be appropriate technical qualifications such as National diploma orDegree and understanding the UK IET regulations (BS7671)

  • Design of lighting and electrical engineering services across aviation, rail, high tech, commercial and education sectors

  • Leading a team of Electrical Building Services Engineers

  • Design of power distribution including cable sizing and protection studies.

  • Design lighting, Fire Alarm, security and comms systems.

  • Contribute to design projects across offices and internationally where required

  • Application of industry standard design and calculation software such as Amtech, Dialux etc

  • Liaising with clients, architects and other design team members.

  • Preparation of reports, drawings and specifications

  • Developing and maintaining excellent client relationships.

  • Project management of suitable projects

  • Compliance with design and QA procedures

  • Monitoring of installation works on site and observance of technical compliance and H&S matters


  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status and full corporate membership of CIBSE

  • Experience of leading people in a building services team

  • Experience of delivering major projects in the UK building services industry – ideally with experience of the UK Rail sector and/or UK aviation industry

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering a range of projects from concept through completion

  • Able to design the range of building electrical services

  • Competent user of Microsoft Office software including Word and Excel

  • Familiar with UK Building Regulations and design standards for discipline

  • Proven ability to work as part of a team, liaising directly with clients, architects and other design team members and the Ability to represent Jacobs at external meetings and at presentations.

  • Flexible, adaptable and collaborative approach to multidisciplinary design, willing to engage across the design disciplines

  • Commercially aware
